What pedagogy means to Arkie Early Education

child-looking-at-log

A child is rich in potential, rather than an empty vessel to be ‘filled’

Different theories about children’s learning and development as well as our own values and beliefs, will impact on our pedagogy (how we teach), and our curriculum (what we teach) at Arkie.

As educators, our understanding about how a child learns and develops is understood and explained by our own knowledge of these theories and by our own experiences.

That every child has the right to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts

Article 31, United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child

Anything that is worth teaching can be presented in many different ways. These multiple ways can make use of our multiple intelligences

Howard Gardner

The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence

Maria Montessori

Education must be not only a transmission of culture but also a provider of alternative views of the world and a strengthener of the will to explore them

Jerome Bruner

Every child needs at least one adult who is irrationally crazy about him or her

Urie Bronfenbrenner

Where is the book in which the teacher can read about what teaching is? The children themselves are this book. We should not learn to teach out of any book other than the one lying open before us and consisting of the children themselves

Rudolf Steiner

Teachers as well as children are constantly learning

We are passionate about constantly exploring our knowledge base to think deeply about our ways of teaching.  This is how we evolve and adapt to improve our practice.

Research from the United Kingdom indicates that specific pedagogical approaches (such as Montessori, Steiner etc) do not have better outcomes than more general approaches.  We believe that with such an abundance of good research available, limiting our approach to one theory of child development would be blinkered.

We therefore draw from a range of perspectives to challenge ourselves in how we do things so that we in turn create a fun and exciting learning environment which responds to the unique way that each child will learn and develop.

The Arkie way of teaching includes elements of socio-cultural theories that among other things emphasise the importance of respecting and understanding a child’s own community and the impact that has on their learning and development.

Join the Arkie Community

To understand just how special Arkie is, you have to see it and experience how we do things.

We encourage all families to come for a tour, meet our teachers and explore our learning environment.
